Location

Located in the east of Guangxi Province, Hezhou is the nearest city to Guilin and also the thoroughfare of three provinces”. Hezhou is an important channel connecting Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Maucao and a forefront and window for Guangxi to open to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Maucao. It has a reputation of “the back garden of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao " in the world.

Administrative Division:

Hezhou is in the far eastern part of Guangxi surrounded by forest and was established in 2002. It borders Hunan to the north and Guangdong to the east. The area is 11,854 square km. The average elevation is 800 m (2,600 ft) and the highest is 1,731 m (5,679 ft) above sea-level. Hezhou administers two urban districts and three counties - Zhaoping and Zhongshan counties and Fuchuan Yao autonomous county,each was certified as a "China's longevity village", making Hezhou the only city in China to cover so many longevity counties.

According to the sixth population census data, the total population of Hezhou is 2,231,900 people. Compared with 2,056,800 people in the fifth national census in 2000, the total number of people in the city has increased by 175,100 people, with an increase of 8.51%, and the average annual growth rate is 0.82%. The permanent population of Hezhou is 1,954,100. Compared with 1,965,500 people in the fifth national census in 2000, the total number of people in the city has declined by 11,400 in ten years, with a decrease of 0.58%, and an annual average of 0.06%. the number of residents above the age of 60 accounts for 19.91% of the whole population. There are 68,301 residents over 80 and 474 over 100 years old.

Ethnic group

Hezhou is a multi-ethnic settlement. Different cultures have merged here, conjuring a unique atmosphere. The city is populated by a number of ethnic minorities. There are more than 20 ethnic groups such as Zhuang, Han, Yao, Miao, Hui, Manchu, Dong, Molao, Li, Tujia and others. Special geographical location and historical reasons have contributed to the convergence of the eight languages on this land.

 

Language

Hezhou is a “language museum”. According to the statistics, there are 29 dialects in hezhou. Hezhou language features diversity and complexity, known as “language museum”, is the "natural laboratory" of study dialect. Besides Zhuang dialect and yao dialect, there are Cantonese Hezhou dialect (local dialect), Hakka dialect, pujia dialect, etc. Each county has a popular language, Cantonese mainly popular in Zhongshan and Zhaoping County, Babu District mainly use Hakka dialect. Almost everyone in the urban area can speak Gui Liu dialect, Cantonese, Hakka, local dialect and Putonghua.

Hezhou is situated in the east of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is also a thoroughfare of Guangxi, Hunan and Guangdong. It is an important channel connecting guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. The road transportation of the city is well developed. With Hezhou as the center, highways can stretch to Guangdong and Hunan.
